Therapeutic Massage
This technique involves the manipulation of the soft tissue
structures of the body. Massage is valued for its ability
to enhance general health and well-being and for its specific
therapeutic effects. Research indicates improved functioning
of the circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, skeletal and nervous
systems and may improve the rate at which the body recovers
from injury and illness. Mental and emotional effects include
increased mental clarity, reduced anxiety, feeling of general
well-being and emotional release. There are certain disorders
where therapeutic massage is not recommended.
The
first appointment generally begins with the massage therapist
asking what prompted you to receive services, your current
physical condition, medical history, lifestyle and stress
level. You are asked to remove the appropriate clothing to
your own level of comfort. Undressing takes place in private,
and a sheet is provided for draping. The therapist undrapes
only the part of the body being massaged, insuring that your
modesty is respected at all times. The session takes place
in a comfortable atmosphere, on a cushioned table resulting
in a peaceful, relaxing experience.
Reiki
Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is an ancient energetic
healing technique utilizing the laying on of hands. It is
also a Japanese word that means “universal life energy”.
This system of natural healing was developed by Dr. Mikao
Usui, a Japanese Christian educator, in the 1800’s.
The Usui system of Reiki involves activating and balancing
universal and individual energy or Ki. The Reiki practitioner
gently places their hands over key areas of the receivers
body, starting at the forehead and moves downward. After treating
the front of the body , the practitioner asks the receiver
to turn over so the back of the body can be treated. During
the treatment the Reiki practitioner holds their hands in
each position with very light pressure from three to five
minutes. The
technique results in the experience of being energized and
relaxed.
Therapeutic Touch
Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary interpretation of several
ancient healing practices. It is a consciously directed process
of energy exchange during which the practitioner uses the
hands as a focus to facilitate the healing process. The hands
of the practitioner are held approximately three inches above
the body. The technique was developed in the early 1970’s
through the pioneering work of Dolores Krieger, Ph.D., R.N.
